Background: Kaoru was born in 1861 to Kamiya Koshijirou, and an unnamed woman and is 18 when the series starts, in 1878.
When Kaoru was a little girl, her mother died, and her father took over raising her. As he didn’t know how to raise a girl, he raised her as a boy instead, teaching her Kamiya Kasshin Ryu, the sword style he invented after witnessing the bloodshed of the Bakumatsu. Kamiya Kasshin Ryu follows the ideal of ‘Katsujin Ken’, or ‘swords that give life.’

However, those ideals were tested when her father was forced to fight in the Seinan war, and never came back, two years before the series starts, when she was 16.

Kaoru tries to keep the dojo running, and ends up with about ten or so loyal students – until two months before the story starts. A man calling himself Hitokiri Battousai starts killing people in Tokyo – and blaming it on Kaoru’s Dojo. This causes her to start roaming the streets at night, searching for the killer, so when she comes upon a red haired rurouni, or vagabond, with a sword, she attacks him. Little did she know that the rurouni, Himura Kenshin, was the real Hitokiri Battousai, and after he defeats the fake Battousai Kaoru offers to let him stay with her, which he does when she tells him she doesn’t care that he used to be Battousai.

Personality: Kaoru is, first and foremost, a child of the Meiji era. She believes strongly in the ideal of Katsujin-Ken, swords that give life, and that ideal runs through her whole world.

Kaoru is generally a happy person, smiling and personable, though she does have moments of sadness and insecurity, such as when Kenshin left for Kyoto and when she discovered Kenshin had been married before, however that doesn’t stop her for long from doing what she believes is right, whether following Kenshin to Kyoto, or attempting to help Yukishiro Enishi.

Kaoru is terrified of being alone, a leftover form the time she spent in an empty dodjo after her father died, and will often act rashly when there is a possibility that she might be left alone again.

One of Kaoru’s defining traits is her compassion. She has a habit of taking in strays and letting them live in her dojo and often tries to help people, even when they don’t thank her for it.

However, Kaoru can be rather naïve and innocent, and sometimes is taken advantage of, such as when she let Kihei stay in her house without asking him about his past.
Kaoru has a natural intuitiveness, often able to tell when the right time to pry or push is, and knowing when to fight, when to talk, and when to stand down and support others.

Though Kaoru is rather overshadowed by the fighters in Rurouni Kenshin, she is a national level Kendoka, and is actually a quite capable swordswoman.

Kaoru has a very hot temper, quick to scream at people or hit them over the head with her bokken, but she is equally quick to forgive, and apologize.

Above all, Kaoru loves Kenshin. She loves him with everything that she is, and wants nothing more then to be with him forever, for him to be happy.

Abilities: Kaoru is a practitioner of the Kamiya Kasshin-ryū. The primary weapon of a practitioner is a wooden bokken. A bokken is generally considered to be a more advanced weapon in kendo practices and can deal more severe damage, hence the bokken is likely reserved only for masters of the Kamiya Kasshin-ryū style or for those who are considered advanced in their studies.

As a teacher of the Kamiya Kasshin-ryū, Kaoru mastered the successions technique. In the first one, Hadome, Kaoru crosses her arms over her head and catches the blade of the opponent with the back of their hands. This allows her to maintain their grip on her sword while catching the opponents blade at the same time. However, if properly used, it can be chained into Hawatari Kamiya Kasshin-ryū's offensive succession technique. It is a counter-attack and can only be performed after a successful use of the Hadome technique. From the Hadome position, Kaoru twists her wrists, thus stripping the weapon of their attacker away from their wrists.

Techniques of this style also are meant to be performed with the weapon broken. With Tsuka no Gedan: Hiza Hishigi (Handle Attack, Knee Crush?) Kaoru dive-lunges at her opponent's knees, bringing the hilt against their knee. She uses this attack to defeat Honjo Kamatari.

Appearance: Slightly over the height of 5 feet, Kaoru has midnight blackish-blue hair that reaches approximately mid-back when left down. Her eyes are blue, ranging from a saphire shade to even a bright cerulean. She's most often seen either wearing her training off-white gi and a navy hakama, or dressed up in a kimono or yukata. Her hair is nearly always worn up in a high ponytail, leaving two small pieces to hang freely in front of her ears.
